Prélude Book 2 No. 4 Les fées sont d'exquises danseuses highlights Claude Debussy's refined handling of musical materials in the contemporary classical piano repertory. The complete engraving encompasses 173 measures across 9 pages, verified against standard contemporary studio engravings. Bibliographic registers identify this title under ISWC `T-243.AC7.CA-1` and catalog entry `mbid-243ac7ca-sheetpdf`.

The temporal design is written in 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), establishing a balanced metric groundwork providing grounded stability with primary weight on beat one and secondary stress on beat three. The indicated tempo mark of ♩ = 121 BPM (*Allegretto*) suggests an atmosphere that is moderately brisk, bright, and buoyant. Interpretively, listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.

Anchored in E Minor, this work utilizes a key signature of one sharp (F♯, with D♯ harmonic inflection). The composer builds structural coherence around E, deploying the relative pole (G Major) to introduce tonal contrast before resolving through B Major. Harmonically, the progression Em → Dm → G → C → F → E7 navigates expressive chord variations (F, E7) returning home cleanly. In terms of hand topography, E Minor yields a somber keyboard realm where navigating between D♯ and the tonic E requires attentive finger placement.

Pedagogically suited for Advanced students (collegiate conservatory benchmark (Fellowship / Advanced Diploma)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on refining subtle dynamic voicing across dense chords, executing octave cascades, and preventing hand cramping. In sections with transparent two-part polyphony and classical Alberti motion, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: employ syncopated pedal changes immediately following each chordal shift to avoid acoustic blurs. Technical Drill: practice rapid runs in diverse rhythmic groupings (dotted-eighth and sixteenth pairs) to eliminate finger lag.

Pianists frequently schedule this piece for conservatory juries, competition recitals, and academic examinations. For performers transposing away from E Minor, optimal vocal targets include D Minor for medium-low voices and F-sharp Minor for upper registers. B♭ transposing instruments sound in concert pitch when reading the score in F-sharp Minor. This title stands in the global public domain, enabling unhindered study, liturgical execution, and recital programming.
