The foundational pitch center is A Minor (zero sharps and zero flats (with G♯ serving as raised harmonic seventh)). Here, A serves as the primary resting point, while modulations into C Major and dominant tensions in E Major shape the emotional contour. Harmonically, the progression Am → Dm → G → C → F → E7 weaves cohesive chordal shifts (F, E7) supporting melodic variety before resolving. For the performer, this layout is characterized by a somber diatonic landscape where the G♯ accidental adds a sharp, poignant upward pull.

Cast in 6/8 (compound duple meter), the score delivers an undulating barcarolle or gigue sway formed by two swinging groups of three eighth notes. At ♩ = 90 BPM (*Moderato*), the musical progression remains balanced with steady metric poise. Pedagogical directive: preserve the gentle circular sway by letting beats two and three within each group lift naturally.

This Easy publication (elementary benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 2–3)) serves as an instructive study in keyboard voicing. Pianists must address maintaining steady hand placement, preventing collapsed knuckles, and releasing notes cleanly. Passages dominated by broken arpeggio figures and modern pulse chords benefit from conscious dynamic shading. Regarding pedal usage, feather the pedal to sustain bass notes without drowning upper textures. Practice Recommendation: rehearse hands individually with a metronome at slow speeds before coordinating hands together.

Performance Applications: In performance programming, Life of May is well matched for contemporary vocal accompaniment, student recitals, and studio recordings.

Transposition Guide: Performers can shift the default tonality of A Minor according to singer comfort: a downward transition to G Minor reduces top-range vocal demands, while modulating to B Minor enhances acoustic carrying power for solo recitals.
