Pretty Savage

Pedagogically suited for Intermediate students (transitional keyboard syllabus (ABRSM Grade 4 to Trinity Grade 5)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. In sections with contemporary broken triad ostinatos and resonant pedal points, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: refresh damper pedal depth synchronously with bass root changes. Preparatory Exercise: record your practice with emphasis on listening for crisp pedal releases on each harmonic pivot.

Set within the harmonic domain of C Major (zero sharps and zero flats), the score secures tonal focus on C. Expressive depth is enhanced through secondary pivots into A Minor and dominant reinforcement via G Major. Harmonically, the progression C → G → Am → F → Dm → G7 pauses expressively on an open half-cadence, leaving harmonic expectation unresolved. In terms of hand topography, C Major yields an all-natural keyboard surface requiring firm curved finger knuckles to prevent sliding on ivory white naturals.

Performers can shift the default tonality of C Major according to singer comfort: a downward transition to B-flat Major reduces top-range vocal demands, while modulating to D Major enhances acoustic carrying power for solo recitals.
