Shallow

In 3/4 (simple triple meter), rhythmic continuity is shaped by a flowing triple lilt characteristic of classical minuets and romantic waltzes. The reference performance speed is ♩ = 110 BPM (*Allegretto*), yielding a moderately brisk, bright, and buoyant tempo profile. From a phrasing standpoint, let beats two and three float effortlessly above the grounded bass root.

Created by Lady Gaga, the composition Shallow demonstrates notable craftsmanship within the popular pop sheet music repertoire. Encompassing 54 measures over 3 engraved pages, the work is collated from accurate modern sheet transcriptions. Designed for Intermediate level pianists (transitional keyboard syllabus (ABRSM Grade 4 to Trinity Grade 5)), this piece demands clean articulation and hand balance. The chief hurdle entails managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Balancing contemporary broken triad ostinatos and resonant pedal points requires distinct volume separation between parts. Furthermore, execute full pedal clears at dynamic changes to highlight intimate moments. Preparatory Exercise: drill awkward chord shifts at 60% tempo, ensuring fingers assume target hand shapes before descending.

Set within the harmonic domain of C Major (zero sharps and zero flats), the score secures tonal focus on C. Expressive depth is enhanced through secondary pivots into A Minor and dominant reinforcement via G Major. Harmonically, the progression C → G → Am → F → Dm → G7 pauses expressively on an open half-cadence, leaving harmonic expectation unresolved. At the keyboard, C Major provides an all-natural keyboard surface requiring firm curved finger knuckles to prevent sliding on ivory white naturals.

Pianists frequently schedule this piece for informal recitals, private studio practice, and collaborative accompaniment. When adjusting the native tonality of C Major, accompanists can shift down a step to B-flat Major for lower voice types or lift the melody into D Major for tenors and sopranos. Woodwinds read comfortably using G Major. Historical copyright on this musical work has expired globally, permitting unrestricted educational and concert use.
