Space Junk Road

Targeted at Intermediate players (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this score presents rewarding interpretive and tactile hurdles. Attention should center on projecting the cantabile soprano melody while suppressing inner accompaniment voices. Accompaniment passages containing flowing keyboard arpeggios that support emotional melodic peaks require subdued dynamics to spotlight the melody. Mechanically, execute full pedal clears at dynamic changes to highlight intimate moments. Practice Tip: drill awkward chord shifts at 60% tempo, ensuring fingers assume target hand shapes before descending.

In 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), rhythmic continuity is shaped by a balanced metric groundwork providing grounded stability with primary weight on beat one and secondary stress on beat three. The reference performance speed is ♩ = 111 BPM (*Allegretto*), yielding a moderately brisk, bright, and buoyant tempo profile. From a phrasing standpoint, avoid pounding downbeats mechanically; keep the line buoyant through intermediate pulses.

Anchored in C Minor, this work utilizes a key signature of three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, with B♮ raised leading tone). The composer builds structural coherence around C, deploying the relative pole (E-flat Major) to introduce tonal contrast before resolving through G Major. Harmonically, the progression Cm → Dm → G → C → F → E7 moves through balanced harmonic transitions (F, E7) reinforcing the tonal root. Under the fingers, C Minor features a commanding acoustic realm with abrupt dynamic contrasts between minor darkness and major relief.
