Anchored in D Minor, this work utilizes a key signature of one flat (B♭, with C♯ harmonic leading tone). The composer builds structural coherence around D, deploying the relative pole (F Major) to introduce tonal contrast before resolving through A Major. Harmonically, the progression Dm → G → C → F → E7 moves through balanced harmonic transitions (F, E7) reinforcing the tonal root. Physically, playing in this key offers a dark contrapuntal space historically chosen for monumental fugues, passacaglias, and somber melodies.
