When Jesus Says, “Follow Me”

The Hardest Word to Say Isn’t “Yes”… It’s “Now.”

“Jesus said to him, ‘Follow Me.'”— Matthew 8:22
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to delay the things that matter most?
We tell ourselves we’ll spend more time with God when life settles down. We’ll forgive after the hurt isn’t so fresh. We’ll serve when work becomes less demanding. We’ll trust Him after we have a little more security.
I’ve said those things too.
Not out loud—but quietly, in my heart.
“Lord… just not yet.”
That’s why today’s Gospel feels so personal.
A man tells Jesus, “I will follow You wherever You go.” Another says he wants to follow too—but first, he has something else to take care of.
Their responses are different, but they reveal the same question:
What comes first in my life?
I don’t think most of us reject Jesus.
We simply keep asking Him to wait.
We wait until we’re less busy.
We wait until our faith feels stronger.
We wait until we’re more confident, more prepared, more comfortable.
But I’ve learned that if I wait until everything is perfect, I’ll probably spend my whole life waiting.
Following Jesus has never been about having perfect timing.
It’s about trusting Him enough to take the next step today.
The truth is, the biggest obstacles in my walk with God haven’t been dramatic failures.
They’ve been small delays.
A prayer I said I’d pray tomorrow.
A conversation I kept putting off.
A step of obedience that always seemed easier to take “later.”
And little by little, “later” became months.
What I love about Jesus is that He never stops calling.
He doesn’t shame us for our hesitation.
He simply says again,
“Follow Me.”
Not because He wants to take something away from us.
But because He knows we’ll never find the life we’re searching for by staying where we are.
Today, I don’t want to give Jesus another promise about someday.
I simply want to give Him today.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
So often I tell You that I will follow, but then I ask for more time. Forgive me for the moments when fear, comfort, or distraction have spoken louder than Your voice.
Help me stop waiting for the “perfect” season to trust You. Give me the courage to obey You in the ordinary moments of today, even when I don’t know what tomorrow will bring.
Teach me that faith isn’t found in grand promises but in daily obedience.
When You call me, may my heart no longer say, “Later.”
May it simply say,
“Yes, Lord.”
