The Freedom I Didn’t Know I Needed

“If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36
There are times when the things that weigh us down aren’t visible to anyone else.
Sometimes it’s fear that quietly follows us from one day to the next. Sometimes it’s bitterness we’ve held onto for years, guilt we can’t seem to forget, or habits we keep promising we’ll overcome “tomorrow.”
From the outside, life can look perfectly normal.
Inside, though, we know what it feels like to carry chains.
When Jesus met the two men in the region of the Gadarenes, everyone else saw people beyond hope. They avoided them. They were afraid of them.
Jesus wasn’t.
He walked toward the very people everyone else walked away from.
That has always encouraged me because it reminds me that nothing I carry is too heavy for Christ. No wound is too deep. No habit is too strong. No past is too broken for His mercy.
The people in that town were amazed by what Jesus had done, yet they asked Him to leave.
I used to wonder why.
But then I realized that real freedom often requires surrender. Jesus doesn’t only remove what hurts us—He also asks us to let go of whatever has quietly become more important than Him.
Sometimes that’s pride.
Sometimes it’s unforgiveness.
Sometimes it’s the false sense of control we’ve been holding onto.
Following Jesus isn’t only about asking Him to change our circumstances. It’s about allowing Him to change us.
Today, I don’t want to hide the places in my heart that still need His healing. I’d rather bring them into His presence, trusting that the One who set people free two thousand years ago is still setting hearts free today.
Because the greatest miracle isn’t simply that our lives become easier.
It’s that, little by little, our hearts become free.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for never turning away from the broken places in my life. You see every fear, every burden, and every struggle that I try to carry on my own.
Please free me from anything that keeps me from walking closely with You. Remove the bitterness that steals my joy, the fear that weakens my faith, and the pride that keeps me from fully trusting You.
Fill my heart with Your peace and remind me that true freedom is found not in having a perfect life, but in belonging completely to Christ.
Help me live each day with a heart that is free to love, free to forgive, and free to follow wherever You lead.
