Have Thine Own Way, Lord
▶️ Don't miss this Song of the Day ◀️
1. Why this hymn still matters
Modern life trains us to manage outcomes: optimize the schedule, force the door, rewrite the future at midnight. Faith often gets reduced to using God as a tool for our preferred ending.
“Have Thine Own Way, Lord” reverses the posture. It does not deny desire or responsibility. It relocates authority. The singer remains active — waiting, yielding, asking to be cleansed and filled — but God remains the shaper.
That is why the hymn survives trends. Every generation rediscovers the exhaustion of self-rule.
2. Origin and historical context
Adelaide Pollard was a Bible teacher and aspiring missionary who longed to serve in Africa. Support and timing did not open as she hoped. In that frustration she attended a prayer meeting where an elderly woman prayed words to this effect: that it did not matter what God did with their lives, if only He would have His way.
The prayer exposed Pollard’s struggle. That night she wrote the hymn’s stanzas, building on the biblical potter-clay image. George Stebbins later provided the gentle tune that congregations still use.
The hymn was not born from a perfect life finally “working out.” It was born from a calling delayed and a will surrendered.
3. What the words really mean
Stanza 1 — Identity before instruction
Thou art the Potter; I am the clay… while I am waiting, yielded and still.
Meaning: Surrender starts with identity. Clay does not design the vessel. Waiting is not laziness; it is refusal to force what God has not released. “Yielded and still” is strength under authority.
Stanza 2 — Surrender includes honesty
Search me and try me… whiter than snow… wash me just now.
Meaning: We cannot ask God to “have His way” while hiding sin. True consecration invites examination (Psalm 139:23–24). The goal is not shame; it is cleansing.
Stanza 3 — Weak people may still surrender
Wounded and weary, help me I pray… touch me and heal me.
Meaning: You do not need full strength to obey. Wounded clay still belongs in the Potter’s hands. Healing and surrender often arrive together.
Stanza 4 — The end of surrender is Christlikeness
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see Christ only, always, living in me.
Meaning: God’s way is not cosmic domination for its own sake. His goal is that Christ be visible in ordinary people — motives, speech, endurance, love.
Replay the refrain once before continuing. Let one line become your prayer.
4. Full lyrics
1 Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Thou art the Potter; I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.
2 Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Search me and try me, Master, today!
Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now,
As in Thy presence humbly I bow.
3 Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Wounded and weary, help me I pray!
Power — all power — surely is Thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!
4 Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!
Hold o’er my being absolute sway.
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me!

6. Guided prayer
Father, I confess that I often love control more than communion.
I have rehearsed futures You have not assigned and feared outcomes I cannot rule.
You are the Potter; I am the clay.
Have Thine own way in my work, my waiting, my wounds, and my wants.
Search me. Wash me. Heal me. Hold me.
Fill me with Your Spirit until Christ only, always, is living in me.
I trust Your hands.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
