GOSPEL READING: John 17:20-26
20 “I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory which you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to behold my glory which you have given me in your love for me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, the world has not known you, but I have known you; and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” The Prayer Jesus Still Prays Over His People
There are moments in Scripture where heaven seems to open before our eyes. John 17 is one of those sacred moments.
On the night before the cross, before the betrayal, suffering, and crucifixion, Jesus Christ lifted His eyes toward heaven and prayed.
But this prayer was not only for the disciples sitting beside Him.
Jesus was praying for every believer who would come after them โ including us today.
This makes John 17 deeply personal. We are not merely reading the words of Christ; we are hearing the heart of Christ praying for His people across every generation.
โThat They May All Be Oneโ
At the center of Jesusโ prayer is one powerful desire:
โThat they may all be one.โ
In a divided world filled with pride, conflict, comparison, and isolation, Jesus prayed for unity among those who belong to Him.
This unity is not based on culture, denomination, nationality, or human agreement. It is rooted in the relationship between the Father and the Son.
Jesus desires His followers to reflect:
- Mutual love
- Humility
- Forgiveness
- Compassion
- Peace
- Faithfulness
The unity of believers becomes a testimony to the world that Christ truly came from God.
The Heart of Christ Before the Cross
One of the most moving truths in this Gospel is that, in His final hours before sacrifice, Jesus was thinking about others.
He prayed:
- For His disciples
- For future believers
- For the Church
- For spiritual unity
- For eternal fellowship with God
Even facing suffering, the heart of Christ remained filled with love.
This reveals the depth of Godโs mercy toward humanity. Jesus did not come merely to establish religion โ He came to restore broken people into communion with the Father.
Unity Is More Than Agreement
Biblical unity does not mean the absence of differences. It means hearts joined together in Christ.
The world often creates division through:
- Pride
- Anger
- Jealousy
- Self-interest
- Hatred
- Fear
But the Gospel calls believers into another way of living โ a life marked by grace, truth, and love.
Jesus prayed that His followers would carry the very love the Father had for Him:
โThat the love with which You loved Me may be in them.โ
This is one of the most extraordinary promises in Scripture.
The same divine love shared between the Father and the Son is poured into the hearts of those who belong to Christ.
Jesus Still Intercedes for Us Today
The prayer of John 17 did not end in the upper room.
Even now, Christ continues to intercede for His people before the Father.
When believers feel weak, divided, discouraged, or overwhelmed, Jesus remains our High Priest and Advocate.
He still calls His Church toward:
- Unity instead of division
- Love instead of hatred
- Peace instead of conflict
- Holiness instead of compromise
- Faith instead of fear
The mission of every Christian is not only to know Christ, but to make Him known through the way we love one another.
Reflection for Today
Ask yourself:
- Am I living in unity with other believers?
- Is my life reflecting the love of Christ?
- Do people see Jesus through the way I treat others?
- Am I contributing to peace or division?
The prayer of Jesus still echoes through every generation:
โThat they may all be one.โ
And wherever Christ reigns in the heart, true unity begins.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the love revealed through Your Son, Jesus Christ.
Teach us to live in unity, humility, and grace with one another.
Heal divisions within Your Church and fill our hearts with the love of Christ.
May our lives become a testimony to the world that Jesus is Lord.
Strengthen us through the Holy Spirit so that we may walk in peace, truth, and holiness every day.
Amen.Early Church Reflection
Cyprian of Carthage wrote:
โThe Lord desired that His people should live in peace and unity, because division cannot enter the Kingdom of God.โ
Even the early Church understood that unity among believers is not optional โ it is part of the witness of the Gospel itself.
