When Mercy Finds Me Matthew 9:13

Scripture
“Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
— Matthew 9:13 (ESV)
There are moments when I quietly replay my failures in my mind. The words I wish I hadn’t said. The opportunities I wasted. The ways I still fall short, even after all these years of walking with God.
When I read about Matthew, I don’t just see the calling of a disciple. I see the heart of Jesus.
Matthew wasn’t searching for Jesus that day. He was simply sitting at his tax booth, doing the same work that had made him wealthy but left him isolated. To most people, he was someone to avoid. His reputation spoke louder than his name.
But Jesus looked at him differently.
He didn’t begin with a lecture about repentance. He didn’t ask Matthew to prove he had changed. He simply said, “Follow Me.”
That simple invitation reminds me that grace often reaches us before we think we’re ready. Jesus sees beyond the version of us that everyone else knows. He sees the person we can become when His mercy begins its work.
I think that’s why His words have stayed with me:
“I desire mercy, not sacrifice.”
It’s possible to become so focused on doing the right things that we forget what God values most. We can attend church, read Scripture, and say all the right words, yet still struggle to show patience, forgiveness, or compassion to the people around us.
Mercy is harder than routine.
Mercy means choosing understanding when criticism feels justified. It means remembering that every person I meet is carrying a story I may never fully know. It reminds me that if God has been endlessly patient with me, I have no reason to withhold that same grace from someone else.
The older I get, the more I realize that I don’t want a faith that only looks good from the outside. I want the kind of faith that quietly changes the way I speak, the way I forgive, and the way I see people.
Matthew’s story gives me hope because it reminds me that Jesus still walks into ordinary places, still calls ordinary people, and still transforms lives that others have already given up on.
And perhaps today, just as He did then, He is gently saying to each of us,
“Follow Me.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You for never defining me by my worst moments. Thank You for seeing beyond my mistakes and calling me with mercy instead of condemnation.
When my heart becomes proud, make it humble. When I am tempted to judge, remind me how patiently You have loved me. When I become distracted by appearances, help me see people the way You do.
Teach me to live a faith that is not measured only by what I know or what I do, but by the mercy I show each day.
And if Your voice calls me again today, give me a willing heart to rise, leave behind whatever keeps me from You, and follow without hesitation.
In Your gracious name I pray.
Amen.
